Three celebrated composers have created works for Icebreaker. These new pieces arose from experimentation with various kinds of music technology. The performance will take place in a specially-curated concert in the Information Gallery at the Science Museum. Choreographer Athina Vahla is designing the flow of the audience through the gallery. The space will be populated by Icebreaker members, their instruments, and music technologies, old and new, to be used in these premiere pieces.
Museums face a conundrum when collecting and exhibiting objects for making sound and music. Protected behind thick glass, glove handled with extreme care, they become mute, their voices left to the imagination. Approached through touch and hearing, however, they reveal themselves in very different ways.
In this live experiment with the musicians of Icebreaker, working sound machines will be exhibited in the The Science Museum gallery for viewing as three new pieces by Shiva Feshareki, Sarah Angliss, & Gavin Bryars unfold.
"This is a one of a kind...a temporary exhibition of sounding technologies (vintage and modern) in the form a performance with a fantastic group of musicians and stellar composers, in the Science Museum."
Dr. Ed McKeon, Curator
