Athina Vahla has taught choreography and movement since 1989 for a range of institutions, groups, disciplines, age and ability. Her classes are physical and task-based and place particular emphasis on the idea of movement intention and its function in the process of forming. Her aim is to encourage and support the development of a distinctive voice by unlocking the creative potential in each person regardless of their experience, level and capacity. Her teaching methods are influenced by choreology and academic tools she was taught during her MA studies alongside methods and devices she invented in the studio herself or with peers. She is genuinely interested in how the mind manifests itself through the body and the creative process in choreography. Teaching often encompasses making work for the groups and public performances. Regular teaching includes for Laban, Birkbeck University, Westminster University, London Metropolitan University, Middlesex University, State School of Dance, Athens; London Centre for Theatre Studies and Tower Hamlets Adult Education. Visiting lecturer includes for London Contemporary Dance School, Central St. Martin’s College of Art & Design, London Centre for Theatre Studies, Akademi, Candoco, Icelandic Dance Company, KAIROS, Venice and workshops for dance teachers in Brussels.
In 2007, Vahla will teach at Central St Martin’s, Graeae Theatre Company, Laban, Kairos and Birkbeck.
